Programme Details
The masters from the University of South Wales provides management practitioners with the knowledge, skills and competencies to perform more effectively at all levels within an organisation. The masters is usually a rigorous ten-module course which will normally take part-time students 3 years to complete: however it is available, via Management Development Centre Limited, to experienced management professionals who are members of one of the industry-recognised professional institutes as a part-time, one year course. In offering this, the University recognises the levels of knowledge attained in the professional qualifications and the value of practical experience in management. Candidates can gain a major academic qualification whilst still in their jobs, as teaching takes place over two residential weekends.

Candidates will attend two taught residential weekends, held at Moor Hall in Maidenhead. Unlike the professional qualifications, there are no examinations. Each weekend module is assessed by means of assignments in the region of 6,000 words and following these, students are required to develop a formal Research Proposal. The final stage of the masters programme involves a detailed research project, taking between 6 months and a year to complete, this is then written up as a dissertation of 18,000 words.

The exemptions mean that the following modules are the only required modules to be awarded the masters:

Module 1 - Leadership & Management Theories
Module 2 - Research Methods
Dissertation

Start Date 9th October 2020

Fee £6,340 + VAT - Accommodation for both weekends £290 + VAT (inclusive of all meals)

Residential Weekend Dates:

Module 1: 9th - 11th October 2020
Module 2: 4th - 6th December 2020

The above weekends are the only dates you are required to attend, all other study is completed at home in either 12 or 18 months.

Experienced middle and senior managers who are full members of their institutes and have been in management positions for a minimum of 5 years can enrol on this top up programme with exemptions allowing them to study only 2 modules and a dissertation and complete within 12-18 months. In offering this fast track route the University recognises the levels of knowledge attained in the achievement of full institute membership.
Busy executives can often not afford to take time out every week to study in a typical university part-time course. However the top up MSc allows individuals to gain a major management qualification whilst still in their jobs, as teaching takes place over 2 residential weekends supplemented by online group support via MDC’s own technology, Webucate. Assignment completion typically takes 10-15 hours per week but can be fitted around existing work and family commitments. The programme offers the unique opportunity to continue working as you study rather than taking the time of to complete a part time or full time course based on campus.
The executive programme creates a tremendous group dynamic where approximately 30 like-minded individuals join together for the 2 intensive weekends. This creates an extremely stimulating experience for all course participants and it ensures that individuals are helped to complete the programme.
All students who enrol on the programme are practising managers. This enables them to apply the 'action learning' concept and utilise the theoretical knowledge learned during the modules back to their own organisations. This has proven to be both an effective way of learning for the individual and of real benefit to the individual’s company. The programme involves a 18,000 word dissertation which can equate to a large and expensive piece of consultancy work for an individual’s employer or company. The subject of the research project is chosen by the student, depending on the issues currently facing their company and the needs of their business. The aim of the project is to not only conduct a one-off piece of consultancy work, but to change the way students think about the business as a whole in order to become more proactive in areas of the company other than their day-to-day tasks. It encourages employees to reach beyond their job descriptions, to proactively seek opportunities and combat problems within the company strategy.
